The lunation number represents the number of times the Moon has cycled the Earth since January 1923 (based on a series described by Ernest W. Brown in Planetary Theory, 1933). One cycle, or lunation, starts at new moon and lasts until the next new moon. New Moon is defined at the instant at which centers of Sun and Moon share the same ecliptical longitude for a hypothetic geocentric observer.
The average duration of lunations is 29d 12h 44m 03s. However, because orbits of Earth and Moon are not circular length of any specific lunation may differ up by several hours. The shortest lunation for years between 5,000 BC and 10,000 AD is 29d 06h 17m 43s (number -79711) while the longest is 29d 20h 16m 17s (number -80917).
Lunation 1 begun with the first New Moon in year 1923 (around 02:41 UTC on January 17).
All times are in UTC. Conjunction with planets is the instant of ecliptic conjunction of Moon with planets.
