The lunation number represents the number of times the Moon has cycled the Earth since January 1923 (based on a series described by Ernest W. Brown in Planetary Theory, 1933). One cycle, or lunation, starts at new moon and lasts until the next new moon. New Moon is defined at the instant at which centers of Sun and Moon share the same ecliptical longitude for a hypothetic geocentric observer.
The average duration of lunations is 29d 12h 44m 03s. However because of orbits of Earth and Moon are not circular length of any specific lunation may differ up with sever hours. The shortest lunation for years between 1601 and 2400 is 29d 06h 31m 28s while longest is 29d 19h 58m 58s.
Lunation 1 begun with the first New Moon in year 1923 (around 02:41 UTC on January 17).
